WHAT
"Berkeley in Silicon Valley," a one-day conference highlighting research at the University of California, Berkeley, relevant to homeland security and privacy, medical developments and environmental insights. The conference is sponsored by the Colleges of Chemistry and Engineering at UC Berkeley.

WHEN
8:15 a.m.-2:30 p.m., Saturday, March 1

WHERE
Grand Auditorium, Building 3, Sun Microsystems Conference Center in Santa Clara (Palm Drive at Lafayette Street). Directions to the conference are available online.

WHO
Eric Schmidt, Chairman and CEO of Google, Inc., will give the keynote address. His talk will cover profitable business models for Internet companies and the debate between open and protected knowledge.

A panel discussion will focus on the balance between achieving homeland security and maintaining the right to privacy, moderated by Shankar Sastry, professor and chair of UC Berkeley's Department of Electrical Engineering & Computer Sciences. Members of the panel include Teresa Lunt, a Palo Alto Research Center computer security expert who is developing software to hide people's identities from the government's Total Information Awareness program; Charles Shank, director of the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory; and Mark Kvamme, partner of Sequoia Capital, a venture capital firm in Menlo Park.

DETAILS
The "Berkeley in Silicon Valley" conference creates a forum that brings representatives from industry, government and academia together to explore new directions in science and technology. This is the third year the conference has been held.
